Data for HSE's mines and quarries inspectorate, are only readily available for the year commencing 1 April 1987. The provisional figures are: 1 fatal and 18 major injuries. 2 Year commencing 1 April 1986. 3 From 1981 to 1986 Q1, as defined in the Notification of Accidents and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1980 and thereafter in the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985 (RIDDOR). RIDDOR widened the definition of a major injury. Figures for major injuries for 1986–87 onwards are therefore not comparable with previous figures. 4 Includes fatal injuries to members of the public arising from work activity, only for those fatal injuries reported to local authorities in 1981–1985. 5 The provisional data excludes that from local authorities.
