HC Deb 21 December 1988 vol 144 c303W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) whether the salaries paid to lecturers in further education colleges in Northern Ireland contain an element in respect of unsocial working hours;

(2)whether lecturers undertaking evening work receive any additional allowance in salary.

Dr. Mawhinney

The remuneration of lecturers is laid down in the nationally agreed conditions of service. Salaries of full-time lecturers are paid in respect of their contracted hours. Any additional teaching hours undertaken, including evening work, are paid at the hourly rate appropriate to the level of the course.

Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what guidance is given by the Department of Education, Northern Ireland to principals of colleges or staff responsible for timetabling in colleges regarding the desirability of sharing evening classes among staff in each department rather than allocating evening classes to the same member of staff annually.

Dr. Mawhinney

None. This is a matter for college management to determine.
