To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the functions carried out under the heading local administration communications, and so on in the United Kingdom, in Table 2.3 of volume 2 of the "Statement on the Defence Estimates 1988".

Table 2.3 of volume 2 of the statement attributes expenditure between the main elements of the defence programme. Some support expenditure cannot readily be attributed in this way and is included under the general heading of "local administration, communications etc. in the United Kingdom". It includes miscellaneous expenditure such as travel, freight and telecommunications costs for all three services; support costs of outstations, and of HQs other than Whitehall; recruiting centres; and payments to HMSO.
