Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list in theOfficial Report a list of the rural maintenance river drainage works for 1989 which will be carried out by the Department of Agriculture, indicating the river and appropriate location.

Mr. Viggers

The rural maintenance river drainage works programme for 1989–90 to be carried out by the Department of Agriculture will not be finalised until next spring. A copy will be sent to the hon. Gentleman at the time.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list in theOfficial Report the arterial river drainage schemes, and major river maintenance works under consideration and those on which he expects work to start in 1989.

Mr. Viggers

The works programme in relation to new schemes and major maintenance works for the financial year 1989–90 has not yet been finalised. The programme will be sent to the hon. Gentleman when available.

Drainage schemes at present under consideration to start in 1989 are as follows:

  • Downpatrick
  • Dunmurry
  • Omagh—Johnston Park
  • Omagh—Dromore Road
  • Londonderry—Springtown
  • Newry—Drumcashellone
  • Newry—Derrybeg
  • Strand Lough (Killough)

Schemes are also under consideration for sections of the following rivers:

  • Fairwater
  • Cusher
  • Mourne
  • Colebrook
