To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people were treated as in-patients in 1978 and in the latest period of 12 months for which figures are available.

In National Health Service hospitals in England, there were 5,370,319 in-patients treated in 1979 and in 1987–88 there were 6,619,354. This represents an increase of 23 per cent.
