To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will outline the work he is doing to monitor the effects of environmentally sensitive area designation on(a) farm incomes and (b) employment; and if he will make a statement.

I have commissioned the universities of Manchester and Newcastle to carry out a detailed examination of the economic impact of ESA designations. I shall be publishing a report which will cover progress on this and a number of other fronts early in the new year.
