To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will provide a breakdown of the number of local authority employees by(a) sex and (b) ethnic origin.

§ Mrs. Virginia Bottomley
In June 1988 local authorities in England employed 841,000 males and 1,479,000 females in general services (ie excluding law and order services). The information on ethnic origin of local authority staff is not collected centrally.
