HC Deb 27 April 1988 vol 132 cc158-63W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of those petrol stations which are also licensed for the retail sale of alcoholic drinks are located in (a) urban areas and (b) rural areas.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The Department has not had cause recently to seek detailed information about the location of licensed garages. Such information as is available relates to the number of garages — petrol stations with off-licences as at 30 June 1986 by petty sessional division. This is given in the table:

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what information he has concerning the percentage of total profit generated on average by the retail sales of alcoholic drinks by those petrol stations which are also licensed for such sales;

(2) whether he has any information concerning the percentage of customers using the shops at those petrol stations licensed for the retail sale of alcohol who also buy petrol.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

We have no such information.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received about the provision in the Licensing Bill which would remove the licence for the retail sale of alcohol from petrol stations in rural areas which hold such licences.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Since the clause relating to garages was added to the Licensing Bill, seven letters have been received of which all but one have opposed the amendment.
