HC Deb 27 April 1988 vol 132 c181W
Mr. Boswell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the new system of registration and control of medicated animal feedingstuff.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Two statutory instruments will shortly be laid before Parliament to implement the first part of new controls on medicated animal feedingstuffs. A central feature is a requirement that all manufacturers of medicated feedingstuffs must register with the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain or the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland and agree to abide by a code of practice. Registration will take place in two stages: 1 July 1988 is the operative date for those with more sophisticated facilities, and 1 July 1989 for the remainder. Fees will be charged to cover the costs of administering and enforcing the register. Further controls on licensing and sale and supply of medicinal feed additives are being prepared. It is intended that these should also come into force on 1 July 1989.
