§ Mr. Terry LewisTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the time scale for deploying new nuclear artillery shells under the Montebello decision.
§ Mr. YoungerThe agreement at Montebello in 1983 did not include specific decisions on such matters. Detailed proposals for implementing the Montebello agreement were submitted to Ministers by SACEUR in 1985 and continue to be pursued with the individual nations concerned. The time scale for the introduction of new artillery rounds will vary in practice from country to country. The United States has, I understand, already deployed some improved artillery shells, designated W79, with its forces in the Federal Republic of Germany but no decisions on modernisation as it affects British forces have yet been taken.
§ 62. Mr. WrayTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the time scale for deploying new nuclear artillery shells under the Montebello decision.
§ Mr. Ian StewartI refer the hon. Member to the reply given earlier today by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State to the hon. Member for Worsley (Mr. Lewis).
