§ Mr. ButlerTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the size of the budget devoted to the fourth medical and health research programme from European Community resources connected with the use of chimpanzees in AIDS research.
§ Mr. NewtonIn conformity with a recommendation of the European Parliament 5 million ecu have been committed to the European Community's fourth medical and health research programme to support centralised facilities for primates used in AIDS research. A separate figure for chimpanzees has not been identified.
§ Mr. CarringtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what help he is giving to local authorities in London towards the costs of providing personal social services for people with AIDS or HIV infection.
§ Mr. NewtonI announced in February that £2 million is being made available in the current financial year to help towards the AIDS-related personal social services expenditure incurred by those local authorities in inner London where the greatest demands are faced. The borough councils are being informed today of the allocations they are to receive which are as follows:
£ Hammersmith and Fulham 474,180 Kensington and Chelsea 467,170 Westminster 245,000 Wandsworth 195,000 Lambeth 160,000 Camden 107,000 Southwark 92,500 Lewisham 89,500 Tower Hamlets 60,000 Islington 30,000 Hackney 30,000 Greenwich 27,200 I have been greatly encouraged by the consideration which the authorities have put into their bids and the sensitivity to the special needs of people with AIDS which they show. I hope that, in the light of our response, health and local authorities in inner London will continue to develop, on a jointly planned basis both the services necessary to ensure people with AIDS receive the care and support they need, and local initiatives to prevent the further spread of the disease.
