To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his policy on out-of-town shopping and leisure complexes in the light of the recent consultation paper issued by SERPLAN on out-of-town shopping and leisure complexes, a copy of which has been forwarded to him.

The London and South East Regional Planning Conference published a paper "Towards a Policy for Regional Shopping Centres" in July 1987. SERPLAN drew on responses to that paper in commenting last autumn on a consultation paper by my Department which became planning policy guidance note 6, published on 20 January. This note sets out the Government's policy on major retail development; a copy is in the Library.
