To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the proportion of prisoners in each security category.

On 31 March 1988, the most recent date for which information is available, 1.6 per cent. of sentenced adult male prisoners were in security category A, 17 per cent. in category B, 45.1 per cent. in category C and 17 per cent. in category D. The remaining 19.3 per cent. were recorded as uncategorised.
