Mr. Grylls

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what status the British Government accord to the United Nations Council for Namibia.

Mrs. Chalker

We do not recognise the claim of the United Nations Council for Namibia to be the administering authority for the territory. The United Nations General Assembly acted beyond its competence under the charter in establishing such a body.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he was represented at the United Nations Council for Namibia conference(a) in Instanbul on 21 March and (b) on past occasions; and if he will make a statement.

We have not been represented at conferences of the United Nations Council for Namibia, which we do not recognise.
