To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what was the change in the number of people employed in(a) manufacturing and (b) the service industries in Wales between 1979 and 1986;

(2) what was the percentage change in the number of people employed in (a) manufacturing and (b) the service industries in Wales between 1979 and 1986.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the change in the number of employees in employment in Wales between 1979 and 1986.

Mr. Peter Walker

The numbers of employees in employment in Wales at June 1979 and June 1986 were 1,033,000 and 861,000 respectively. This represents a change of 172,000.
