Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give details of regional health authorities and special health authorities which have instituted disciplinary proceedings against consultants for failure to fulfil the terms of their National Health Service contracts.

Mr. Newton

We do not become involved in disciplinary proceedings against consultants other than in those cases where a consultant appeals to the Secretary of State against dismissal under paragraph 190 of the terms and conditions of service. The information requested is not therefore held centrally.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he has any plans to publish guidelines for regional health authorities and special health authorities to help them to monitor consultants.

We have no plans to do so.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will institute a survey to determine the numbers of hours a week devoted by consultants to (a) National Health Service work and (b) private practice; and if he will break this down by specialty, region and by type of contract.

We have no plans to carry out such a survey.
