10. Mr. Robert G. HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the pay and conditions and the working environment of nurses working in Greater London.
§ Mr. NewtonThe pay of nurses, midwives and health visitors is determined on the advice of the independent Review Body for Nursing Staff, Midwives and Health Visitors. Terms of service are a matter for negotiation on the Nursing and Midwifery Staffs Negotiating Council.
Since 1979 nurses in Greater London, along with those in the rest of the country, have benefited from an increase in basic pay of 30 per cent. in real terms and a reduction in the working week from 40 to 37½ hours without loss of pay.
