To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many patients, excluding deceased patients, who were in-patients for over one year, were discharged in each year since 1982; what were the destinations of these patients; and what arrangements have been made to maintain contact with them.

[holding answer 10 November 1987]: The type of information held centrally about discharges differs between general hospitals and psychiatric hospitals in the NHS in Scotland.

The available information relating to discharges and destinations of patients discharged from general hospitals after a stay of more than one year is as follows

Information relating to discharges, destinations and after-care arrangements of patients discharged after a stay of more than one year in a mental illness or mental handicap hospital is set out in the tables. Columns 1–10 in each table refer to after-care arrangements as follows:

  2. 2. out-patient clinic
  3. 3. local authority mental health services
  4. 4. community mental health services
  5. 5. day hospital
  6. 6. other form of after-care
  7. 7. statutory guardianship
  8. 8. more than one after-care arrangement
  9. 9. no after-care arrangement
  10. 10. not known.
