HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 c207W
Mr. Batiste

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to alter current immigration procedures so as to prevent women from the Philippines offered for sale as brides from gaining entry into the United Kingdom.

Mr. Renton

The repeal of section 1(5) of the Immigration Act 1971, as proposed in the Immigration Bill, will ensure that all applications from women seeking to come here on the basis of marriage to a British citizen or other Commonwealth citizen will be subject to the current immigration rules. Under the rules the entry clearance officer must be satisfied that the marriage was not entered into primarily to obtain admission to the United Kingdom.
