Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will explain the effects of the SHARPEN report with regard to registration for people with a mental handicap;

(2) if he will explain the effects the SHARPEN report will have on long-stay patients in the Clydesdale constituency;

(3) if he will explain the effects the SHARPEN report will have on patients with a high level of dependency in the Clydesdale constituency;

(4) if he will make a statement explaining the effects the SHARPEN report will have on general practitioners in the Clydesdale constituency ; and what incentive payments will be made to general practitioners in the Clydesdale constituency;

(5) if he will make a statement explaining the effects the SHARPEN report will have on hospital in-patient facilities for children in the Clydesdale constituency;

(6) if he will make a statement explaining the effects the SHARPEN report will have on special care baby provision in the Clydesdale constituency;

(7) what effect the SHARPEN report will have on acute services and their future share of resources;

(8) what kind of financial support and taxation systems Her Majesty's Government will implement to encourage informal care, as recommended in the SHARPEN report;

(9) what will be the criteria for the evaluation to determine a hospital at home scheme for cost efficiency, as recommended in the SHARPEN report;

(10) what effects the SHARPEN report will have on local government provision of long-stay accommodation;

(11) if he will explain the effects the SHARPEN report will have on the number of hospitals for the mentally-handicapped in (a) Scotland and (b) Clydesdale.

The report "Scottish Health Authorities Review of Priorities for the Eighties and Nineties" (SHARPEN), has the status at present only of a working document that is under consideration by the Scottish Health Service planning council. The council will consider the recommendations in the report in detail at its meeting in March and will thereafter advise the Secretary of State.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will ensure that all members of Scottish health boards, Scottish health councils and Scottish health service unions will receive copies of the SHARPEN report immediately.

My right hon. and learned Friend has received eight inquiries for copies of the SHARPEN report.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations were made to the working party on the SHARPEN report by the Scottish health service unions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when he next expects to make a visit to a hospital in the Clydesdale constituency; and if he will meet the health service unions on such a visit.

My right hon. and learned Friend has no plans at present to visit a hospital in the hon. Member's constituency.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the information held by him centrally on Scottish National Health Service hospitals.

The main items of information on Scottish National Health Service hospitals are contained in "Scottish Health Service Costs", published each year jointly by the Scottish Home and Health Department and the National Health Service and in "Scottish Health Statistics" published annually by the common services agency for the Scottish Health Service. Copies of each are in the Library of the House.

(2) what effects the SHARPEN report will have on Birkwood hospital;

(3) what effect the SHARPEN report will have on staffing levels at each hospital in the Clydesdale constituency.
