HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 c185W
Mr. David Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if Her Majesty's Government have any plans to encourage the use of British sign language for the deaf in schools and to help in training qualified interpreters; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

The method of communication used in schools for children with hearing impairments is a matter for the governing bodies of individual schools to determine. It is not something in which my Department becomes involved. With regard to the training of interpreters, I refer my hon. Friend to the reply by my hon. Friend the Member for Wantage (Mr. Jackson) to the right hon. Member for Manchester, Wythenshawe (Mr. Morris) on 3 November at column643.
