HC Deb 05 November 1987 vol 121 cc833-4W
Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many known non-agricultural undertakings, involving fish farms, maggot farms, riding schools and kennels, are recorded by the Health and Safety Executive; and how many visits per year the average premises may expect, particularly to check on YTS trainees and the health of young people.

Mr. Nicholls

The Health and Safety Executive's HM agricultural inspectorate is responsible for 48,000 non- agricultural undertakings, involving fish farms, maggot farms, riding schools, kennels, contractors, landscape gardeners, golf courses etc. Inspections are planned and carried out according to known hazards on particular premises and according to the number of persons at risk. A total of 800 inspections of non-agricultural premises are planned in the coming year: there is no set visiting cycle for these premises.

Specific visits are not normally made to check on YTS trainees or young persons but during an inspection an inspector examines the health and safety conditions in which all persons work giving particular attention to the needs of all young people, and also to others who may be affected by the work activity.
