HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 cc737-8W
Ms. Walley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will invite the local elected representatives responsible for public protection, hon. Members representing Staffordshire and a radiation monitoring expert of the county council's choice to visit the Swynnerton camp and satisfy themselves that there is no danger from radiation;

(2) if he will now publish the dates of all exercises involving the use of radioactive material at Swynnerton;

(3) what amount of topsoil was removed from Swynnerton following exercises involving radioactive material; to where; and where it now is.

Mr. Ian Stewart

It is not our practice to discuss details of nuclear accident response exercises. However, the precautions that we take to ensure the safety both of participants in nuclear accident response exercises and of the general public were fully set out in the reply that I gave to the hon. Lady and to the hon. Member for Cynon Valley (Mrs. Clwyd) on 23 July at columns386–87. I see no valid reason for the suggested inspection of Swynnerton training area.
