§ Mr. Berminghamasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the normal procedure with regard to extending the residence period granted to a person likely to be imprisoned for political reasons on return to his own country, on application, after an initial grant of 12 months' residence has lapsed; and what were the considerations made in the case of Mr. Safpar Hamdani, overseas co-ordinator to the Pakistan People's Party, currently in London.
§ Mr. RentonAn individual in this position would normally be granted leave to remain for an initial period of one year and then be granted further leave to remain for a period of three years, after which permanent settlement may be granted. Further leave to remain may however be granted for shorter periods than three years where, for example, there is a possibility of a change in the circumstances which led to the initial grant of leave to remain. The normal criteria have been applied in the case of Mr. Safpar Hamdani.
