HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 c737W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what use is made of the facilities at Goose Bay in Labrador for low-flying training; and whether there are any plans for an expansion of Royal Air Force activities there.

Mr. Freeman

The facilities at Goose Bay in Labrador are currently used for low-flying training by the Royal Air Force, as well as the air forces of Canada, the United States of America, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Netherlands. Usage is governed by a multilateral memorandum of understanding, voluntarily entered into by all these Governments, including Her Majesty's Government. This limits the maximum number of aircraft and personnel to be stationed there. There are at present no plans to renegotiate this understanding. Goose Bay also remains one of the possible locations for the proposed NATO tactical fighter weapons training centre, on which a decision by NATO has not yet been made.
