Mr. Redwood

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost to the Exchequer in a full year if both husband and wife enjoyed a separate capital gains allowance.

Mr. Norman Lamont

If husband and wife were each entitled to an annual exempt amount of £6,600, and if unused amounts were transferable to the other spouse, the cost would be of the order of £50 million to £100 million.

Mr. Redwood

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost in a full year of raising the capital gains tax allowance to £10,000 per person, and allowing both husband and wife a separate allowance.

About £250 million to £350 million if annual exempt amounts unused by one spouse were transferable to the other.
