HC Deb 03 November 1987 vol 121 c695W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much has been spent by his Department on advertising in national newspapers in each of the past five years; and if he will provide a breakdown by newspaper titles.

Mr. Moore

The amount spent by my Department on press advertising including national newspapers in each of the past five years is as follows:

£
1982–83 1,600,000
1983–84 1,938,000
1984–85 3,662,000
1985–86 3,188,000
1986–87 5,570,000

It is not possible to distinguish between national advertising and all other press advertising. A breakdown by newspaper titles cannot be provided as the information is commercially confidential.

National press advertising has been an element in a variety of DHSS campaigns covering social security and health subjects including social security reformed benefits, the primary health care review, AIDS public education, drug prevention, blood donor and nursing recruitment.
