HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 c523W
6. Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will give the latest time scale for the construction and operation of Sizewell B pressurised water reactor nuclear power station.

Mr. Parkinson

Preliminary work on site started on schedule on 29 June 1987 after consent was given in March. A number of major contracts have now been placed, providing United Kingdom firms with unique opportunities. These totalled nearly £700 million by September. The target construction period to full commissioning is 69 months, and the station is expected to be operational by mid-1994.

24. Mr. Devlin

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what effect the construction of the Sizewell B nuclear power station will have on employment opportunities in the energy industry.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I understand that Sizewell B will provide an average of 10,000 jobs in the power engineering and construction industry and on site over a seven year period. The peak will be about 15,000 jobs in 1990–91.
