79. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what further proposals he has for merit awards to civil servants.

Mr. Brooke

Performance-related pay arrangements for grades 2 and 3 and an interim scheme for grades 4 to 7 are now in place. The new flexible pay system for scientific, professional and technical grades includes performance-related pay provisions which come into effect on 1 April 1988.

It remains our intention to extend performance pay in the Civil Service and we shall be bringing forward further proposals for the inclusion of other groups of staff.
