§ Mr. John Townendasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his assessment of the effectiveness of the Diseases of Animals (Protein Processing) Order 1981 and the Importation of Processed Animal Protein Order 1981 in reducing the incidence of salmonella in processed animal protein.
§ Mr. Donald Thompson[pursuant to his reply, 8 May 1987, c. 565]: The regular monitoring of protein processing plants under the Diseases of Animals (Protein Processing) Order 1981 has shown that at least 50 per cent. consistently produce a salmonella-free product. On premises where positive samples have been found, prompt remedial action has resulted in the production of salmonella-free products. Licensed imported animal protein products must comply with similar standards.
