HC Deb 11 March 1987 vol 112 cc226-7W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether his Department has carried out any analysis of lake water of flora and fauna in lakes, and of land surrounding lakes, to ascertain changes in the level of radioactivity following the Chernobyl disaster.

Mr. Gummer

Yes. The relevant data were published last October in a report from my Ministry entitled "Radioactivity in Surface and Coastal Waters of the British Isles — Monitoring of Fallout from the Chernobyl Reactor Accident". A copy of this report was placed in the Library of the House. A further report on radioactivity in the aquatic environment will be made this year as part of the Ministry's annual series and a copy of it will be placed in the Library.

In addition, my Department carried out a comprehensive sampling programme for food and agricultural products, the results of which were published last month in a report entitled "Radionuclide Levels in Food, Animals and Agricultural Products — Post Chernobyl Monitoring in England and Wales". A copy may be found in the Library.
