HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c89W
Mr. Key

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he proposes to take to prohibit corporal punishment in list D schools.

Mr. Rifkind

From 31 March 1986, when funding was transferred to the local authorities, the schools ceased to be approved by me and they became independent social work establishments subject to registration by the appropriate local authority. By agreement of their managers no former list D school has used corporal punishment since 1984.

With effect from 15 August 1987 corporal punishment will be abolished for children whose education is provided in whole or in part from public funds.
