§ Mr. Michael McNair-Wilsonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what immediate action he intends to take following the publication of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys report on incidents of leukaemia, lymphatic cancer and other cancers in areas around nuclear establishments; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. CurrieThe lengthy and detailed report published by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys provides a large volume of statistics which require careful interpretation. The report's authors indicate that the number of relatively high results is similar for the areas of interest and for their controls. The authors also conclude that certain findings may warrant further consideration, including checks on the validity of the results and consideration of the need for field studies. The report is being referred to the independent committee on medical aspects of radiation in the environment, which will in due course advise on the report's findings and the need for further investigations.
