asked the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the implications of a comprehensive test ban treaty for the future development of British nuclear warheads.

As my hon. Friend the Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said on 20 January in reply to the hon. Member for Merionnydd Nant Conwy (Mr. Thomas) at column524, we believe it would be 601W premature to re-open negotiations on a comprehensive test ban treaty until progress in resolving outstanding issues particularly on verification becomes more apparent. This issue does not therefore arise.
