HC Deb 04 March 1987 vol 111 c600W
Mr. Gerald Howarth

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how much of his Department's budget for 1987–88 has been allocated to energy efficiency investment in his Department's property; and how that figure compares with 1986–87.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

£12 million has been allocated for expenditure on energy efficiency measures in MOD property during 1987–88, as compared with £15 million for 1986–87. The difference is due to the fact that 1986–87 sees the end of extra funding made possible by savings elsewhere in the budget, which are not available in 1987–88.

The MOD's investment in energy efficiency is not restricted to the amounts directly allocated, however. New building projects—and wherever possible refurbishment also—incorporate the latest energy efficiency standards, but since these are an integral part of design and materials their cost is not identifiable.
