HC Deb 03 March 1987 vol 111 cc565-6W
55. Mr. Robert C. Brown

asked the Paymaster General how many jobs he estimates will he created by tourism in 1987; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Ipswich (Mr. Weetch) on 3 February 1987 at columns605–6.

83. Mr. Butterfill

asked the Paymaster General what is the cost of creating a job (a) in the tourism sector through the use of section 4 grants under the Development of Tourism Act 1969 and (b) through other Government schemes.

Mr. Trippier

According to a recent study by Department of Employment economists, the cost averages from £6,000 in the local area (a radius of five miles from the project) to £4,000 in the region (a radius of 50 miles). These figures represent the gross cost per net full-time equivalent job at 1984 prices.

It would not be appropriate to compare these averages with cost per job estimates for the scheme made by other researchers, which use different definitions and methods. Nor, for similar technical reasons, is it proper to compare them with cost per job estimates for other Government schemes.
