§ Mr. Chris Smith
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will indicate the numbers of police officers, by rank and department, who were assigned to investigate the assault in August 1983 of five youngsters in George's road, Holloway, at each stage of the three investigations into the incident; and what were the dates on which their reports were submitted and to whom.
§ Mr. Douglas Hogg
The first investigation was conducted by a detective chief inspector who reported on 16 March 1984. The second was conducted by a detective chief inspector who reported on 24 August 1984. The third was conducted by a detective chief superintendent who reported on 12 February and 23 April 1985. Each of these officers was attached to the Metropolitan police complaints investigation bureau and was assisted by a detective sergeant throughout his investigation and by other officers from time to time as the need arose. Their reports were submitted to the commander of the complaints investigation bureau. In February 1986, the Commisioner of Police of the Metropolis instituted a further review of the case. This was led by a deputy assistant commissioner who was assisted by a team of officers and civilian staff. The size of this team varied in accordance with particular requirements, but at one time included over 20 individuals.
