HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c606W
Mr. William Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will seek to remove all obstacles which restrict the freedom of diabetics to drive under vocational licences on the public highway.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Under European Community law, insulin-treated diabetics are not permitted to drive heavy goods or public service vehicles on public roads. Prior to 1983 drivers taking certain tablet treatment were also prohibited, but the rules have now been relaxed to allow those taking oral preparations to continue to hold a licence.
