My right hon. and learned Friend and I have received no prior information about the merger announcement. I understand that Babcock employs some 2,500 at Renfrew, Dumbarton and Paisley. The merger will be considered by the Director-General of Fair Trading, who will advise the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry on whether to refer the case to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
