HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 c58W
Mr. John Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the weekly cost to public funds of the continued presence of police outside the South African embassy.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to a question from the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Banks) on 9 July 1987 at column213.

Mr. John Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrests since March 1986 have taken place outside the South African embassy; and what charges have been brought.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand that since the beginning of the demonstration outside South Africa house, in April 1986, there have been a total of 337 arrests. The charges have included criminal damage, assaults on the police (including one occasioning actual bodily harm), threatening behaviour, obstructing the police and obstruction of the highway.
