Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will set out in the Official Report the criteria he has laid down for the working parties on different curriculum areas.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend announced the setting up of the science and mathematics working groups on Friday 10 July, at columns 283 and 284, and copies of the groups' terms of reference and membership have been placed in the Library. Similar arrangements will be made for the setting up of subsequent working groups.

Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what consideration is being given to the needs of gifted children in preparing the new national curriculum.

Mrs. Rumbold

The working groups being established for each foundation subject will he asked to recommend attainment targets and programmes of study which are challenging and appropriate for the whole ability range. Our proposals are designed to help all pupils including the most able to progress as far and as fast as is right for them.
