Mr. Wigley askedthe Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to monitor the proportion of congenital malformations among babies born to women living in those parts of Scotland which were subject to rises in radiation levels following the nuclear accident at Chernobyl; and what plans he has to publish the information.
§ Mr. John MacKay[pursuant to his reply, 23 January 1987]: The information services division of the Common Services Agency for the Scottish Health Service already maintains information about certain congenital malformations occurring in babies born to women in Scotland. Any significant variation in the number of specific malformations occurring should be identifiable. It is not likely to be possible to determine which individual cases might be associated with increases in radiation levels arising as a result of the Chernobyl incident.
