Tourism is not an industry in the conventional, statistical sense of a group of businesses with a distinctive output of goods and/or services. A Wales Tourist Board study published in September 1977, however, concluded that about 83,000 were employed in the industry directly or indirectly. The board estimates that the numbers employed have grown since then to at least 90,000.
