§ 19. Sir Trevor Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy what increase there has been in productivity in British Coal from 1979 to the most recent date for which figures are available; how this compares with the increase from 1973 to 1979; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. HuntAverage deep mined revenue output per man shift rose from 2.24 tonnes in 1978–79 to 3.21 tonnes in the current year to 3 January, an increase of 43 per cent. This compares with a drop from 2.33 tonnes in 1972–73 to 2.24 tonnes in 1978–79. The recent dramatic increases underline the industry's potential.
