asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) when he last visited Her Majesty's prison Long Lartin; and for what purpose;

(2) when he last visited Her Majesty's prison Gartree; and for what purpose;

(3) when he last visited Her Majesty's prison Wakefield; and for what purpose;

(4) when he last visited Her Majesty's prison Wormwood Scrubs; and for what purpose.

Mr. Mellor

My right hon. Friend visited Wormwood Scrubs prison on 1 November 1985 as part of a programme of visits drawn up to enable him to see at first hand the work of the prison service in all types of penal establishment. He went again for its carol service last Christmas.

He has not yet visited Gartree, Long Lartin and Wakefield prisons.
