Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps are being taken to clear the backlog of supplementary benefit single payment claims in the Camberwell, Peckham and Kennington Department of Health and Social Security offices; and what steps are being taken to prepare for the processing of claims likely to be generated as a result of the forthcoming campaign by the welfare benefits resources network on heating additions.

Several measures have been taken to deal with outstanding single payment claims in the Department's offices in Camberwell, Peckham and Kennington (Oval).

Some single payment work from local offices in London south region has been outstationed to the Chatham and Broadstairs offices where 24 additional staff (12 at each office) have been recruited to deal exclusively with this work. Both Chatham and Broadstairs are currently dealing with single payment work from the

  • Regional Blood Transfusion Centre
  • Rochdale ESMI
  • Royal Albert Edward Infirmary Wigan boiler house
  • Royal Albert Edward Infirmary Wigan phase one
  • Royal Lancaster Infirmary phase 2
  • Royal Preston accommodation
  • Royal Preston administration and accommodation
  • Sharde Green—maternity and gyneacology
  • Stepping Hill manufacturing pharmacy
  • Tameside General geriatric unit
