HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c18W
36. Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce measures to seek to afford protection to motorway drivers from other drivers who harass them from behind.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department takes every opportunity to warn drivers of the dangers of driving too close. Advice is given in publicity and in the Highway Code and the manual "Driving". A simple rule—"leave two seconds between your vehicle and the one in front"—tells drivers the minimum safe gap.

"Keep your distance" is also used on experimental signs recently installed on M25, and about to be installed on M1. We shall monitor the effects.
