asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects the computerisation of local social security offices to be completed; whether any local offices will have to be closed during the installation of such equipment; and if he will make a statement.

The mainframe computer projects making up the Department's operational strategy are scheduled for implementation by mid 1992 with installation on a national basis beginning in late 1989. These projects include local office project (LOP) system which will replace the existing microcomputer support for supplementary benefit work already in use in the large majority of offices. Arrangements to install mainframe systems are still under consideration and will take careful account of the need to maintain effective service during the implementation period.
