HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c54W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Paymaster General if the information to unemployed claimants about the ethnic monitoring exercise at the Handsworth unemployment benefit office will be (a) in languages other than English and (b) given sufficiently in advance to claimants so as to allow them time to reflect before deciding whether to co-operate.

Mr. Lee

Posters have been on display in prominent positions in the offices since 18 December 1986 and are in the following languages:

  • English
  • Gujerati
  • Hindi
  • Urdu
  • Punjabi

Staff have been instructed not to count any claimant who does not seem to understand that he/she is being asked to give details of his/her ethnic origin.
