HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 cc118-9W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to monitor the effects upon health of adding fluoride in the public drinking water in areas which prior to the Water (Fluoridation) Act 1985 did not have it to one part per million.

Mrs. Currie

We monitor the safety and efficacy of new and existing water fluoridation schemes, both for their effects on dental health and other aspects of public health, and plan to continue to do so.

Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidance he has given to chemists, hospitals, the retail trade and any other affected group about the sale or use of fluoride toothpaste in areas where the level of fluoride in the water has been raised to one part per million.

Mrs. Currie

None. The normal use of fluoride toothpaste in a fluoridated area is not considered to be in any way harmful to health.
